Baltimore-style Applique 12 Month Class:
Again, using Elly Sienkiewicz’s methodology, (www.ellysienkiewicz.com) your journey will take you through twelve different lessons of needle-turned, applique quilting in the tradition of the classic Baltimore style. This is an indepth, detail-oriented 12-month class for those seriously interested in the timelessness of needle-turned, Baltimore-style applique. Each lesson is 3 hours long and builds on the previous lesson, requiring a 12-month commitment. Homework includes at least one block each month needing to be completed before you can progress to the next lesson. Each lesson builds on the previous class and cannot be skipped. Typically, you’ll end up with between 12 and 24 blocks which are then assembled into a quilt top with borders and completed.
This is an exciting and delightful class giving you the opportunity to learn new skills, hone current skills and make great new friends. Class sizes are deliberately kept small to ensure lots of teacher attention per student. Many students begin a 12-month Baltimore class with feelings of trepidation but quickly learn that, YES, they too can learn to make a beautiful Baltimore-style applique quilt !!
The first class will teach beginning needle turn techniques on a practice block. The block is then made into a wall hanging or a pillow. This first class enables you to begin learning the methodology as well as to help you to ease into the 12-month commitment. You will then begin a second block, also the first month, which will be included in your final quilt top. Those who have previously worked with Baltimore style of applique will only work on the second block.
I know you’re dying to ask the big question, “What will I learn in this class”?? Join Debbie as you learn about cutwork applique and the hidden tack stitch, inlaid and onlaid applique, 3/16″ seams, points, curves and corners. You’ll learn to make patterns from freezer paper, pattern bridges and the blind stitch. Before you know it, you’ll be appliquing in the opposite direction, facing the seam, 1/8″ seam allowances plus writing on your quilt! You’ll enjoy mastering straight-edge applique plus improving on sharper points. It gets even more fun when we add a second color, cutwork islands, layering, abutting and everyone LOVES folding fabric into flowers, rectangle roses and circle roses plus adding stitched rose hairs. And all of this is just in the first six months!!!
In the second half of the year you’ll learn to stuff roses, layer roses, do cutwork roses and a huge favorite, ruching!! You’ll be using a textured-edge running stitch plus needle-turning without a marked seam turn line. You’ll love making superfine stems, stuffed berries, perfect grapes as well as split leaves. Next, we’ll explore the English paper method, spray applique, yo-yo hearts and basted reverse applique. Toward the end of the year we will touch on buttonhole applique in various forms. The last month is what Elly calls the “Mary Evans” Challenge. Without saying too much, envision lots of flowers, leaves, fruit and urns!!!! Only Elly Sienkiewicz can teach sooooo much!!!!:)
